Ham Jam House -Concert
Hank & Shaidri Alrich
Hank and Shaidri Alrich will play a fine acoustic concert on Saturday, January 14th, 2017, doors open at 7:00 PM.
Hank & Shaidri Alrich
Hank & Shaidri ~ Acoustic American string band music from a dad and daughter working out of Austin, Texas – a dynamite duo across genres and generations.
Stunning “blood harmony” vocals mingle with lovely instrumental work on guitar, fiddle, and mandolin. A relaxed “here and now in the musical moment” spirit prevails, as Hank & Shaidri drill into tradition, their original work, and a great reservoir of contemporary writers’ material. All in, this is a special version of acoustic American string band music, one that appeals to many listeners, regardless of age or general musical preferences. Earl Poole Ball says Hank & Shaidri are his favorite duo. Others say stuff like this:
“Hank and Shaidri play thoughtful folk that is honest and direct and I welcome them back to the Blue Door.”
-- Greg Johnson, The Blue Door, Oklahoma City Oklahoma March 19 2014
“…Hank & Shaidri Alrich, who put on at Threadgill’s one of the most engaging sets I saw last year.”
-- Margaret Moser, Austin Chronicle, March 29 2012
“This stuff is Carter Family good.”
-- Duggan Flanakin, Flanfire Blog, February 26 2010
“Ten timeless tracks…” “She glows in the dark…”
-- John Conquest, 3rd Coast Music Review of Carry Me Home, February 2010
“I don’t want to oversell this, but I’ve never heard better singing.”
-- Charilie Prichard, Austin Texas July 2008
A Ham Jam House Concert offers artists freedom to present their deepest material. Accordingly, expect a preview of compositions Hank and Shaidri plan to include with their second album, slated for a 2017 release. Pat Harris, on upright bass, will join them tonight, as well as for the recordings.
Shaidri Alrich was born in Austin, Texas, and grew up in a small town in the mountains of northern California. Never aspiring to be one of the cool kids, she began studying classical violin when she was three. She loved nothing more as a child than to learn every song on an old bluegrass album. She spent her teenage years singing with a women’s a capella Celtic quartet (getting invaluable experience with four-part harmonies). Her restless nature has had her working on tour boats in Alaska, tending bar and working at racetracks in Kentucky, and going from summers in Hawaii to winters in Colorado – always bringing her fiddle and guitar along for the ride. In May of 2008 she found her way back to Austin in search of warmer weather and the chance to play more music.
Shaidri has a terrific ear for harmony, a voice that pulls listeners deeply into great storylines, and a poet’s touch when she needs to write a song. She is also Vice President of Operations for Go Dance, Austin’s premier social dance instruction studio.
Hank Alrich is an excellent composer, a strong instrumentalist, and an engaging singer. He is also mildly notorious for having guided Austin’s legendary concert venue, Armadillo World Headquarters, through the second half of the 1970’s, until the wrecking ball of progress smashed the way for a high-rise office building. The ‘Dillo put Austin on the international live touring map, and the stage was set, literally, for “The Live Music Capitol of the World”. He thinks about that now when mired in traffic in Austin.
Pat Harris is a bassist, songwriter, and composer with musical roots in classical, jazz, and American traditions. Originally from Michigan, he graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor’s degree in classical bass performance and a minor in philosophy from Central Michigan University (2007). He earned his Master’s degree in jazz studies with academic honors from the University of Texas at Austin (2009).
