Cats and the Canary / Left to Right: Lauryn Gould, Luke Hill, and Ryan Gould Gould
Lauryn Gould, Luke Hill, and Ryan Gould

Cats & the Canary began making music together in the spring of 2011, influenced and inspired by the great jazz artists and tunes of the 1920ís, 30ís and 40ís. With tight arrangements and sweet harmonies, the trio plays hot jazz and swing in a style sometimes reminiscent of the Hot Club of France, sometimes evoking the relaxed sound of the Nat Cole Trio, and sometimes swinging with the fiery lightheartedness of the Cats and the Fiddle. The trio chooses repertoire not often heard and the flute provides a unique and lovely dynamic to the ensemble.

Lauryn Gould (flute and vocals) has a diverse musical background -- growing up in a musical family and learning to sing harmony and play by ear, then going on to earn a Bachelor of Music degree in classical flute performance, all the while learning about and performing in as many genres of music as possible -- from jazz, to indie rock and world music. She can also be heard playing with the Minor Mishap Marching Band, Deja Flute Ensemble, Duo Phosphene, The Lovely Sparrows, and The Eastern Sea, among others. Lauryn started indie-classical consortium, The Sound Bridge Project, with a group of her colleagues, and serves on the board for jazz and swing dance non-profit, The Hot Rhythm Foundation.

Ryan Gould (string bass and vocals) has been playing string bass for many of Austin's finest early jazz and swing bands since he arrived in 1999, evolving his full, driving, unique sound from his love for death metal, traditional Irish music, cartoons, and early 20th century American music. In addition to Cats and the Canary, Ryan plays with Aunt Ruby's Sweet Jazz Babies, Erik Hokkanen and the Hip Replacements, The Jazz Pharaohs, The East Side Dandies, The Thrift Set Orchestra, The Copa Kings and Floyd Domino. Ryan also serves on the board for The Hot Rhythm Foundation, and regularly participates in and organizes various community music projects.

Luke Hill (guitar and vocals) grew up with musicians on boths sides of his family and has been playing guitar since the age of five. Playing music was never more than a hobby, until the discovery of vintage swing jazz (and more specifically the music of Django Reinhardt) sparked a passion for vintage swing music and guitar that continues to this day. In addition to his work with Cats and the Canary, he also performs with his solo project, 'Luke Hill and The Hot Pursuits' and with Austin musician Olivier Giraud. When he's not playing music, Luke spends his time as a filmmaker, actor and writer.
