Matt Harlan...

If there’s a performer today that embodies the oft-applied moniker of “songwriter’s songwriter” it’s Houston favorite, Matt Harlan. A troubadour of the first degree, Matt has been bringing his songs of bus-stops, coffee-shops and lives overlooked to stages across his home-state of Texas, the USA and Europe. Born and raised in Texas, Harlan soaked up the richness of the state and its song-smiths while bouncing between its big cities and small towns.

With two studio albums to his name, Harlan exposes a range of influences, to interpret a generation steeped in plastic and filtered through the Hill Country limestone. His expressive vocals recall Chris Smither and Chris Knight, shading his poignant songs with soaring heart and aching grit.

Matt's second album, "Bow and Be Simple," was recorded in Denmark with backing band The Sentimentals. The collection features tunes in a variety of moods, unified by a cozy, almost vintage vibe and is being well received by national and international Americana radio, earning the #1 spot on the Euro Americana Charts (as did his debut, “Tips & Compliments”).

Harlan is a winner of multiple songwriting accolades, from outfits like American Songwriter and Billboard. He was named Singer-Songwriter of the Year in the 2013 Texas Music Awards and was featured alongside a stellar cast of characters (Lyle Lovett and Guy Clark) in the documentary, “For the Sake of the Song" about Houston great folk venue, Anderson Fair. He also won 1st place in the Troubadour Contest at the 2011 Telluride Bluegrass Festival and performed on the mainstage at 2011's Rice Festival in Fischer, Texas and 2012's Kerrville Folk Festival. He won the Wildflower Arts and Music Festival’s Best Song award in 2009. He was also named the regional New Folk Winner at the Kerrville Folk Festival.

Matt has recently been out on the road in the US and abroad opening for Americana greats such as Guy Clark and James McMurtry.

He has a new album called Raven Hotel, produced by Rich Brotherton, which he recently supported with a European tour.

All three of Matt's albums have hit #1 on the Euro-Americana charts.

No Depression called Matt, “a truly talented and gifted storyteller.”

CountryChart.com said, “Matt Harlan's Tips & Compliments is an Americana gem that heralds the arrival of a major new music talent.”

Ali Holder...
Austin singer/songwriter Ali Holder lists Wichita Falls as her hometown, but her new album, “In Preparation For Saturn’s Return,” could be her ticket to prominence on the national stage.

With a smoky blues tinge to her folk-based approach, Holder offers nicely crafted, self-penned songs that show an impressive stylistic range, while never straying too far from a comfortably laid-back foundation. And a tasteful less-is-more production sound showcases the way her vocals work perfectly with her lyrics to put her delivery out front, where it belongs.

This is music that sounds like it was made by real musicians who know and respect each other, and not just some generic gathering of first-call studio hired hands. Kicking off with the bluesy swing of “Falling Up,” it’s obvious that Holder and her pickers were having a good time in the studio.

Playful interplay between Holder’s singing and violinist Phoebe Hunt’s freewheeling fiddle is a good indicator of the memorable music to come. Songs like “Drinking Double,” “Mourning Dove,” “Lost and Found,” “The Only Thing” and “I Saw a Wolf,” a dark but entertaining duet with guitarist Daniel Thomas Phipps, are standouts in a whole set of standouts. Good album of music.

Daniel Thomas Phipps...
Daniel Thomas Phipps is a member of the band The Kinfolk, and also performs his singer-songwriter shows around the area. He is mentioned by most Central Texas songwriters as one of their favorites, and is certainly one of my favorites. He's a witty and entertaining songwriter, and if you haven't heard him yet, you need to put him on your bucket list. His song swap at the Radio Free Texas Float Trip, with Forest Wayne Allen and Pake Rossi was the highlight of that weekend for me. He's currently working towards recording the latest Kinfolk CD.
