Michelle Alany, Violin and Voice
A passionate performer on violin and voice, Michelle is a versatile and active member of the Austin music scene. Specializing in acoustic music that features lush strings, soulful vocals and rhythmic groove, Michelle delivers unique interpretations of traditional Sephardic (Judeo-Spanish), Balkan and Israeli songs, as well as original compositions. True to Austin's musical diversity, she incorporates Western and Eastern musical elements into an eclectic blend of lyrical improvisation, lively village dances, and deep tone colors. She offers a fresh, unique sound, drawing from the richness of traditional music and embracing a great dynamic range.
Michelle performs and records with stellar national and local artists including the Trans-Siberian Orchestra, Oliver Rajamani, Trio Los Viligantes, Roberto Reggio (Atash), La Guerrilla, Dave Madden, Jessica Shepherd, Billy White, Sumukhi Devi, Michael Longoria, Dave Stringer, Michelle Alany and the Seasons of Joy, Nefesh and The Inheritance.
Jesse Berkowitz, Guitar
Jesse, a multi-instrumentalist and gifted songwriter has been the longest member of Nefesh, occasionally joining folk-music forces when Michelle and he were undergrads in University of Califonia, Santa Cruz studying music. He teaches and plays music full-time, creating intricate compositions for his prog intstrumental band of awesomeness, Vanished Clan, as well as rockin out with the lively fun prog metal band Globster with Marc. Look for his specially crafted folk song collection soon.
Shirley Johnson, Accordion/Vocals
Shirley grew up dancing, playing, and singing lovely and little known international folk music. She has performed on accordion throughout the eastern US with various groups, performed at Czech festivals, and as an Austinite, performed at Emo's with an Indie Rock band. She also has sung in conventional choirs, performing at Carnegie Hall in NYC, at Disney World, and at the Vatican and other places in Rome, Italy. http://www.vjeverica.com/
Hannah Carney, Cello/Vocals
Hannah started out on the classical train, playing cello in high school and college orchestras, and then was delighted to join Nefesh in 2010, shortly after her arrival in Austin. She has loved learning an Eastern European repertoire, developing bass lines, improvisations and melodies, forming a unique skill-set on the cello. Nefesh is happy to have Hannah as one of the nightingale voices, as she recently began exploring her foreign tongues by most recently performing a new song with the band in the Aromanian language for the Austin International Folk Dance community (AIFD.cc)...
Marc Henry, Drums/Percussion
A very talented drummer in the bloom of youth, Marc loves exploring new textures in Nefesh, providing a crucial part of the groove sometimes on djembe (West African drum), as well as on a more traditional small drum kit set up. He also enjoys recording at his home studio as well as playing intense driving grooves with Jesse in an indie prog rock band, Globster, a tightly composed band that knox anyone's sox off.
Benjamin Alany, Dumbek
Benjamin discovered the joys of being a musician shortly after moving to Austin and becoming a drummer for live music belly dance shows. While interested in a variety of styles and art forms, he often performs for a variety of Middle Eastern dance troupes around town, bringing a traditional warm sound of the dumbek to the stage.
Evan Wanserski, Cellist/Bassist
A recent graduate from Berklee College of Music in Composition, Evan is a great musician, composer and private instructor. A new arrival to Austin, he teaches here in town, and plays in several bands. Evan plays guitar, piano, bass and cello, phew! We are excited to introduce him as our newest addition to Nefesh, crankin' up the low-end for your grooving pleasure :)
Keys Always fascinated by sounds and sights of the world, Avi loves playing jazz piano when he is not busy traveling the globe, dancing salsa and drawing/writing comics. Music has long been a passion for Avi and he lends a great sound to Nefesh with the contrasting tone color of keys to the string section.
