Rio Novo will present a fine acoustic concert on Saturday, February 16th, at 7:00 PM.
Rio Novo, the Brazilian quintet, will be presenting an afternoon house concert in the Far West Neighborhood at the Ham Jam House.
Rio Novo was born in 2009 out of a meeting between Sammy Epstein, Javier Jara, and Carlos Ufret at one of Daren Appelt's famous Ham Jam sessions. Javier and Carlos had been playing as a duo ("Zafra") specializing in music of many Latin-American countries. The three met on the balcony of Daren's house and played a few Brazilian tunes together. The music sounded so good to the trio that they decided to form a group specializing in Brazilian music. Acoustic bass and drums were added to fill out the group's sound, and Rio Novo was launched.
Rio Novo performs Bossa Novas, sambas, choros, and other Brazilian song forms by Brazilian composers including Antonio Carlos Jobim, Chico Buarque, Djavan, Pixinguinha, and others. Each piece performed by the group is arranged by Carlos Ufret. Many of the arrangements based on classic recordings of well known Brazilian performers.
Bossa Nova, popularized in the 60s, has a warm, sensual, pulsating feel.
Samba is typically upbeat and quintessentially "Brazilian Carnaval." The
music performed by Rio Novo is for listening AND for dancing.
