Write-up by Jon and Maria...
You're invited to a very special house concert: "Go Lightning", the Jon Hogan String Band's album of old-time music, performed live and unplugged, in the stunningly beautiful music room at Daren Appelt's North Austin home. Daren hosts the elite Ham Jam House Concerts, and we’re honored to bring this historic American roots music to his series.
Most of Jon Hogan's arrangements of the 16 traditional songs are based on recordings made between 1927 and 1958, and many of the songs are included in the Smithsonian’s Anthology of American Folk Music and Mountain Music of Kentucky Vol. II. Old-time artists such as Dock Boggs, Clarence Ashley, Uncle Dave Macon, the Carter Family, Grayson & Whitter, Rutherford & Burnett and Bascom Lamar Lunsford inspired the versions on Go Lightning.
In the spring of 2011 the Jon Hogan String Band recorded the songs the old way, on half-inch tape, around one ribbon microphone in single day, at Stephen Doster and James Stevens' EAR Studios in East Austin. You can purchase the CD online at www.jonhoganmusic, and we'll have copies on hand at the concert.
