Ham Jam House Concert

James Hyland & Rob Socia
08/06/2011

James Hyland and Robert Socia: There's something special about twin guitars harmonising chords along with the warm voices of two very talented writers singin' their hearts out! Rob contributes exceptional talent as a lead guitarist and adds immensely to the richness and emotion of their music. And rumor has it a certain well-respected Austin violinist will sit in. All-in-all a very sublime and rewarding evening.

The players...
James Hyland...
Over the last decade James has had it especially good as the central singer and songwriter of the popular and lauded South Austin Jug Band.

Hyland’s musical career has been a delightful surprise for him. Born in Charlotte, North Carolina, where he lived until his family moved to vCorpus Christi, Texas when he was in third grade, he was weaned on the Motown sounds that his father enjoyed.

Then, around the time he was 10 years old, Hyland caught Bob Dylan playing “Like a Rolling Stone” on a David Letterman prime time special from Radio City Music Hall. “I loved the sound,” he recalls, “and when I saw that, I was like, who the hell is that? I couldn’t understand a word he was saying, but I loved the sound he was making.”

Over its 10 year run, SAJB morphed through seven different configurations and covered countless road miles, winning devoted fans as well as high critical acclaim like the Austin Chronicle’s praise for their “superb musicianship and enticing songsmithing.” For Hyland, whose one goal in life had been to do something he loved for a living, the band’s distinguished decade of making music was a gift indeed.

So what to do for an encore? Go back to the solo career he set aside when it birthed SAJB. In the same spirit, James does it with the magical musical assistance of his good friend, Rob Socia and others as The Joint Chiefs. At the same time he enhanced his own artistic brand that possesses a hypnotic power and an intensity that is emotionally captivating.

Robert Socia...
The music of Rob Socia is a more introspective and sometimes darker view into Americana music in Texas. Featuring the storytelling & songwriting of a native of Austin, Socia has spent the past 12 years honing his guitar and songwriting talents by playing and writing with his own The Robert Socia Band and various other Austin bands. His own roots rock sound has been influenced by the likes of Lyle Lovett, The Band, Uncle Tupelo, Steve Earl and Little Feat.

His touring band featured a unique blend of musical artists, with Socia handling lead vocals and rhythm, slide and lead guitars. Socia's lyrics detail life's dreams, lessons and relationships. “All the songs I write are about real life events and people, my story is on my albums.” says Socia. Songs such as “The Armadillo Song” and “Black Gold” showcase his Lone Star roots. “Songwriting is such an important part of music and a way for me to really express myself,” Socia says. “If I can tell a good story that someone relates to, then I feel I have done my job."
